Matakana is one of our favourite spots on the map of New Zealand. It’s located a short drive from Auckland which makes it a popular destination (especially in summer) for many people. It’s a reasonable drive from Tauranga as well, so we decided to take this opportunity and explore Matakana and then move up north all the way up to Cape Reinga. Here is the first travel video from our series about the top of New Zealand’s North Island.

Matakana is a very diverse region offering many attractions for any taste and budget. People looking for a more luxurious way to spend their time might want to visit the Brick Bay – winery and restaurant with an amazing sculpture trail. The latter can be also accessed without buying food or drinks, just for admission. Another luxurious spot – Koru Hideaway, – great accommodation with 2 guest houses for up to 4-6 people in each. It’s very unique, mainly because of its location and privacy, but also for beautiful design, views and heated swimming pool.

If you’re up for more budget-friendly options, you might want to visit parks and beaches (they are free, yay!). There is definitely no shortage of such locations in Matakana. Must-visit spots are Omaha Beach and Tawharanui Regional Park. Tawharanui is not only famous for beaches and surfing, but it’s also a home for fenced bird sanctuary where you can spot many of New Zealand native birds including kiwi birds at night.

There is a couple of other less known attractions in Matakana as well. The Farmer’s Daughter is an amazing cafe serving delicious dishes made from local ingredients. And by local we mean they grow right next to your table! Very friendly atmosphere and good location. Also make sure to check out Charlies Gelato, an ice-cream parlour off the beaten path, where you can try yummy ice cream and relax from driving.

Our next stop is Northland and we start exploring this region by visiting Kerikeri. Check out more of our travel videos by visiting links below.
